Experienced Cultural Workers
The Cultural Recovery Project is overseen by Dr. Richard Kurin, the Smithsonian’s Under Secretary for History, Art and Culture. He is a cultural anthropologist, author and international cultural heritage leader who has served the Smithsonian for more than three decades. He worked with Haitian colleagues to organize the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Haiti program in 2004 and now serves on UNESCO’s International Coordinating Committee for Haiti.
The Cultural Recovery Center is managed by Olsen Jean Julien, Haiti’s former Minister of Culture and Communication, who served as Program Coordinator for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Haiti program in 2004. He is a trained architect, who earned his degree at Columbia University.
Corrine Wegener is the International Coordinator for the Cultural Recovery Project . She serves as President of the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield, and co-organized the project. Currently a curator with the Minneapolis Institute for the Arts, she aided the stabilization of the Iraqi Museum during the Gulf War.
Stephanie Hornbeck serves as Chief Conservator for the Cultural Recovery Center. She is recently retired from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art where she served as conservator for over a decade.
